Ivo Telec

Attorney at Law

Ivo Telec was born in Brno, Czech Republic, in 1959. He graduated from the Masaryk University (called Jan Evangelista Purkyně University at that time) in Brno, Faculty of Law in 1982. Initially, he worked as notary public and clerk. Since 1990, he has practised as attorney at law with focus especially on intellectual property, unfair competition, personality law including personal data protection.

Ivo Telec is an international arbitrator and panellist for .eu domain name disputes. He is a member Appeal Committee of the Industrial Property Office in Prague and ex-member of the former High Group of Copyright Experts, European Commission in Brussels. Between 1984-2004, he was an authorized expert in the field of economics specialized in accounting, prices and assessments.

Ivo Telec has long-time practical experience in legal audit of intellectual property and enforcement of rights. He lectures at Masaryk University in Brno (guarantor of the Intellectual Property Law course since 1991) and at Palacký University in Olomouc (chairman of Civil and Labour Law Department) as well as at Bratislavská vysoká škola práva, Bratislava, Slovakia. He is also lecturer for Czech Bar Association in the field of intellectual property law.

Ivo Telec is co-author of the Czech Copyright Act of 2000 and participated in preparing of many other national laws, inter alia, as a member of the Government Legislative Commission for Civil Law. He was also a member of the ministerial recodification commission on the new Czech Civil Code and in this time he is a member of the commission of the implementation of the new Czech civil legislature. In addition to that, he is an author and co-author of many publications, such as Annotation to the Copyright Act, Přehled práva duševního vlastnictví (Survey of Intellectual Property Laws), Copyright Agreement Forms, Tvůrčí práva duševního vlastnictví (Intellectual Property Creative Laws), Práva výkonných umělců v provozovatelské praxi (Rights of Practising Artists), International Trade Marks and Signs Project, International Encyclopaedia of Laws, Intellectual Property (Czech Republic), Enforcement of Industrial Property Rights in Central and Eastern Europe, Patent Enforcement Worldwide. As a foreign expert, he participated in many research projects.

He worked for the Max Planck Institute for Foreign and International Patent, Copyright and Competition Law in Munich as a guest researcher (1999) and for UNIDROIT, the International Institute for the Unification of Private Law in Rome (2002).

Ivo Telec is a member of Ligue international du droit de la concurrence (LIDC); International Association for the Advancement of Teaching and Research in Intellectual Property (ATRIP).

In 1996, He was awarded Štefan Luby’s Medal (the Slovak lawyers´ prize) and in 1998 Masaryk University Rector’s Prize for the Annotation to the Copyright Act. He was proclaimed by the Czech Bar Association and epravo, a.s. Lawyer of the Year 2006 in the category of intellectual property.
